Rome Accommodation Guide

I’ll share insights on the best areas to stay in Rome, suited to different preferences, along with the pros and cons of each area and their locations in relation to major attractions. Having visited Rome four times, each time experiencing a different neighborhood, I can confidently offer seasoned advice on where to stay based on your needs.

Where to stay in Rome?

You can also consider my hotel recommendations for each region, which I have researched in detail and read a lot of reviews.

Centro Storico

This is the historic center of Rome, a neighborhood that includes popular attractions such as the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. I can say that this is the best neighborhood to stay in Rome for those who want to stay in history, in the most photogenic area of Rome and walk to most places in the city. Naturally, there are many restaurants and cafes. However, prices are high and it can be a bit noisy due to the crowds.

Trastevere

Trastevere is a bohemian neighborhood famous for its narrow streets, vibrant nightlife and authentic Roman restaurants. It’s an ideal area for those looking for a real Roman experience. It takes a while to get to the main sights on foot, you’ll need a car or public transport. But there are some hidden alternative places around Trastevere. I have stayed here before, it was very enjoyable.

Spagna

Spagna is the most elegant neighborhood of Rome. Luxury shops, famous cafes and the Spanish Steps are located here. It is one of the most vibrant and fashionable areas of the city, full of art galleries and boutiques. It is close to touristic spots, very close to Villa Borghese, so it is also good for families with children. Those who want to stay in a central and luxurious neighborhood may prefer this place. Of course, prices are high due to these conditions.

Monti

This is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Rome. It is characterized by vintage boutiques, art galleries and local restaurants. It is walking distance from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. It is a trendy and central area. Prices are also more affordable than the neighborhoods above. One of the places I have stayed before.

Prati

This is the neighborhood right near the Vatican. It is a bit far from the tourist areas outside the Vatican, but it is a quiet and elegant neighborhood. There are also luxury shops and restaurants in this neighborhood. I think families may prefer this neighborhood. Unfortunately, there are not many hotel options in this area.

Esquilino

This is a very convenient area in terms of transportation thanks to its proximity to Termini Station. I stayed here during my last visit and was quite satisfied. There are international dining options, shopping and historical basilicas nearby. You have a good chance of finding affordable hotels in this area. While it may not be the best choice for families, it’s a region I would recommend for its excellent value for money.
