Berlin is one of Europe’s most attractive cities, blending history and modernity, art and alternative culture. This diversity is reflected in the city’s accommodation options, where there is something to satisfy every visitor’s interests and budget. Berlin is a big city and it is important to choose the right accommodation for your travel style. That’s why I’ve put together a list of the best areas to stay in Berlin and my recommendations for the best hotels for each of them. Here is my Berlin Accommodation Guide.

Berlin Accommodation Guide

Every neighborhood in Berlin has its own character. I will try to explain in detail the best areas to stay in Berlin and for whom these areas are particularly well-suited.

Where to stay in Berlin?

Depending on the neighborhood you choose, I’ll recommend excellent hotels with the best reviews across various budgets to help you make your decision.

Mitte

Mitte is the heart and most central district of Berlin. It is home to the city’s most important tourist attractions. There are also plenty of shopping and dining options in this area. Of course, it is also easy to get to more distant places by public transportation. If you are planning to do a lot of sightseeing, if you are visiting Berlin with children and especially if it is your first time in Berlin, this is definitely the neighborhood where you should stay in Berlin. Hotels may be a bit more expensive than in other parts of Berlin, but I think it’s worth the time it saves to be so close to the tourist attractions. I have stayed in the Mitte neighborhood every time I have been to Berlin. Here are the hotels I have stayed in myself and was satisfied by my stay: Adina Apartment Hotel Berlin Checkpoint CharlieGenerator Berlin AlexanderplatzLulu Guldsmeden

Located in the northeast of Mitte, this neighborhood might be the most family-friendly place in Berlin. With children’s shops, great green spaces, lots of playgrounds and lots of fun attractions for kids, I think it’s a great place for families with young children. It’s also family friendly as it’s relatively far away from the party centers of Berlin. It’s not the cheapest part of Berlin, but you have the chance to stay in decent apartments at affordable prices. Moreover, you can reach Mitte in a short time.

Friedrichshain

Friedrichshain is one of Berlin’s most dynamic and energetic neighborhoods, perfect for young people and nightlife lovers. Friedrichshain is considered the heart of Berlin’s nightlife, with alternative bars, clubs and world-famous electronic music venues. There are also trendy cafes and restaurants. It is a bit far from historical and tourist attractions, but easy to reach by public transportation. I think the East Side Gallery, the longest preserved part of the Berlin Wall, is the only tourist attraction here. I can say that it is also suitable for those looking for budget-friendly accommodation.

Kreuzberg

Kreuzberg is one of Berlin’s most colorful and multicultural neighborhoods. It is also the neighborhood with the largest Turkish population in Berlin, and is even called Little Istanbul. So you have a chance to find delicious Turkish food. It’s not very close to the tourist attractions, but it’s easy to get around. Great venues, art galleries and boutiques. I would say it’s a hipster neighborhood. As a final note, this neighborhood is where David Bowie lived during his time in Berlin.

Neukölln

Neukölln is one of Berlin’s fastest growing and changing neighborhoods. This once unpopular neighborhood is now one of the most vibrant and culturally rich areas of the city. After Kreuzberg, Neukölln has the largest Turkish population in Berlin. For this reason, Turkish food places are also available here. The nightlife is also getting livelier. I think it would not be wrong to say that it is on its way to becoming second Kreuzberg. Especially young people can choose it for budget-friendly accommodation.

Charlottenburg

Another family-friendly neighborhood is Charlottenburg in the west of Berlin. This was the center of West Berlin during the Cold War, when the city was divided, but today it is a more sophisticated part of the city. It’s a bit far from the city center and tourist attractions, but there are also Charlottenburg Palace, Aquarium Berlin and Berlin Zoo. You can easily reach the center by public transportation.
