Where to stay in Stockholm?

I’ll share my carefully selected hotel recommendations for each neighborhood. I am not affiliated with these hotels, but I tried to find the best reviewed, well-located and clean hotels for every budget.

Gamla Stan

This is the medieval center of Stockholm and still the heart of the city, with many important cultural and historical buildings. It is a very pleasant neighborhood with narrow cobblestone streets and colorful houses. There is something to discover around every corner; cozy cafes, boutique shops and traditional Swedish restaurants await you. It is also an ideal place to take instagrammable photos. The biggest advantages of Gamla Stan are its lively atmosphere and central location. However, let me mention a few negatives for those who are thinking of staying in Gamla Stan. First of all, prices are usually high as this area is quite touristic. Also, the narrow streets and crowded tourist groups may not be ideal for those looking for quiet. It should also be noted that some of the old buildings in the neighborhood may not be satisfactory in terms of modern comforts.

One of Stockholm’s most vibrant neighborhoods, Norrmalm is a great place to stay in the city. There are modern hotels, chic restaurants and wide shopping streets. It is especially ideal for those who love city life and prefer to be in the center of everything. Norrmalm is also very advantageous in terms of transportation. Since Stockholm Central Station is located here, it is very easy to reach both the airport and other areas. For those who like nightlife, Norrmalm’s bars and clubs are also very good. All in all, Norrmalm is a great choice for those looking for a central location, easy transportation and vibrant city life. Moreover, there are hotel options for every budget. This area is also my favorite place to stay because it has the most accommodation options.

Södermalm is one of the coolest and most creative neighborhoods in Stockholm. I can say that it is also one of the meeting points for those living in Stockholm. This is Stockholm’s hipster neighborhood, full of bohemian cafes, vintage boutiques and street art. One of the biggest advantages of this neighborhood is its lively and colorful atmosphere. You can find the trendiest places in the city here and spend time with your friends in boutique cafes and bars. Transportation is also very easy. It is a large neighborhood on the east side of the island of the same name, south of Gamla Stan, and public transportation is easy. It is an ideal accommodation option for those who love the alternative lifestyle of the locals and nightlife.

Some of Stockholm’s most famous museums are also located in this neighborhood. Djurgården’s advantages include plenty of green space and a variety of museums and activities. But it is much quieter than the city center and far from the tourist areas. Therefore, it is a very good choice for those who are primarily looking for nature and culture, but not for those looking for a central location.

If you are looking for a quiet neighborhood to stay with your family, Kungsholmen is the place for you. There are family-friendly hotels and plenty of parks and playgrounds for young children.
